Looking over the entries for Saturday and couldn't take my eyes off of the Grade I Alabama this Saturday at Saratoga Race Course. There are six horses in the race, but there is an entry, making only 5 betting interests. Well you have the rematch between Music Note/Proud Spell. There are three new commers to this rematch and that would be Mushka/Skylighter/Sweet Vendetta.
Well you have Music Note who met up with Proud Spell in the Mother Goose Grade I at Belmont Park where Music Note won. The facts you don't know is that Proud Spell had a rough trip throughout this race, and then was DQ to be placed third. I'm sure that if Proud Spell hadn't had such a rough trip, then she would have won. Proud Spell has even beaten Indian Blessing.
Last time out both went their seperate ways. Music Note went to the CCA Oaks Grade I at Belmont Park where Music Note and her stable mate Little Belle finished 1, 2. Music Note is coming into this race with better Beyer numbers than Proud Spell.
If that wasn't enough Larry Jones sends in Gabe Saez to ride Proud Spell which has been his mount throughout most of her starts. Gabe will be sitting in the jockey room waiting all day for this ride, I have to assume he will make it his best. Gabe has come in for 2 races so far for this Saratoga meet and has scored a win out of those 2 starts. Larry Jones has had 3 starts with 1 win, 1 place, so he is pretty live with his horses. Trainer Saeed bin Suroor is 0 for 7 starts with 3 places and 1 show. Yes he hits the board, but he is still winless going into this weekend.
On paper I would say Music Note looks to be the better horse on paper, being 4 wins out of 5 starts this year. Proud Spell has had 6 starts this year with 3 wins, 1 places, and 2 show. Neither of these two horses have ever raced at Saratoga Race Course, which can always be interesting. Especially because it is known as the "Graveyard To Favorites". Well the morning lines have been set, and Music Note is Even and Proud Spell is at 6/5.
As for the other part of the field that I really haven't spoken about. You have Mushka who J R who has ridden the last two times out. She won at this distance in a Grade II, and she will step up to the next level. She will receive no respect in this field with the two power houses in here, and one having an entry. Her Beyer Figures are in a league of her own. With her best being 84, which isn't very competitive to these other horses. Her morning line is 8/1 and could suprise anyone here!
Sweet Vendetta just won the Grade II Black Eye Susan at Pimlico on the mud. If Saratoga Race Course gets more rain on Saturday, then this horse could become a great value play. This filly is 2 for 2 on the Wet, and one of those races was the Grade II victory. At odds of 10/1, that would be some great value. Her biggest highlight is this filly has in 7 starts she has improved in her Beyer Figures here they are starting with her first race: 39,50,60,78,83,90,92. I don't know about you, but you have to look at this one given the fact that she likes to improve. The only problem is her top speed figure doesn't even touch Music Note's last 3 races. Let it rain, and this could be a huge play. If it rained, Music Note could scratch but Proud Spell is 2 for 2 in the money on a wet track. The other thing I like here is that trainer Gary Contessa got rid of Channing Hill who has been the rider for the last three races. He picks up respected jockey Ramon Dominguez who rode this filly before. Gary usually uses Javier Castellano but he will be riding Music Note, so I think it is good that he went with Ramon!
Today we had a freak rain storm at the race track. It rained in the backstretch but not on the top of the stretch. It also rained in the paddock area but not near the betting windows. We were Good to Fast /Off Turf.

Updated at 917am on Friday AM. ****Please note that there is an entry in the Alabama Stakes Grade I. When you make your entry you are picking one horse (not an entry). For example if pick Music Note and Little Belle wins and Music Note doesn't hit the board you will receive 0 points.****
Today we received more rain, causing NYRA to take the Feature off the turf. This resulted in the 4 entries to receive the favorite since their horses were scratched. This is the standings after 3 weeks of racing:
CRK 78points
David N 71 points
Little Bug 67 points
Tim 61 points
TGran 57 points
Little Puppy 23 points
Corn 22 points
Spafan 15 points
Manco 8 points
NTamm 5 points
CRK has the lead by 7 as they travel down the backstretch, and start to head into the far turn. David N is still right there on the rail in second. There is a break of 6 back to Little Bug who has been inching her way throughout this race. A break of another 6 back to Tim who has been head to head with TGran who is fifth. Then a break of 34 back to the rest of the field Little Puppy, Corn, Spafan, Manco and NTamm. NTamm is spotting the field 73 points! The field has entered into the far turn...........

Today we received more rain, but it started off as a nice day. The Spa opened Fast/Good, and now for sure I know the Turf is Soft. There was a scratch in the West Point Handicap which was Key Event, so the favorite was assigned to those contestants. After 5 days of racing, let's see where we stand:
CRK 78points
David N 66 points
Little Bug 62 points
Tim 56 points
TGran 52 points
Little Puppy 23 points
Corn 22 points
Spafan 15 points
Manco 8 points
NTamm 5 points
CRK looks to be poking his head in front and starting to pull away from the others.
